Two kinds of PDF protection
- A password to open the file. You need the password; enter it here and you get a copy that opens without one. This tool cannot guess or crack a password you do not know.
- Restrictions only. Some PDFs open freely but block printing, copying or editing. These are removed without any password.
How to unlock a PDF
- Drop the PDF. The tool checks what kind of protection it has.
- Enter the password if it asks for one.
- Download the unlocked copy. The original file is not changed.
Good to know
- Text, images, links, bookmarks and form fields are kept exactly as they were; only the encryption is removed.
- Bank statements, payslips and e-tickets are often protected with a password such as your date of birth or account number; the sender usually explains the format.
- Unlocking happens in your browser. The file and the password are never uploaded.
- Only remove protection from documents you own or are allowed to change.
Frequently asked questions
Can I unlock a PDF without the password?
Only if it has restrictions without a password to open it. If it asks for a password when you open it, you need that password.
Why does my bank statement ask for a password?
Banks protect statements so that only you can read them if an email is intercepted. The password format is usually given in the email, for example part of your account number or your date of birth.
Will unlocking change my PDF?
No. The content is copied as it is; the new file simply has no encryption.
