Why preview your snippet?
Your title and description are your advert in search results. If they are too long they are cut off with “...”, and the part that sells the click may never be seen. Search engines cut by width in pixels, not by a fixed number of characters, so “WWW” takes much more room than “iii”. This preview measures the real width of your text.
The limits it checks
- Title: about 600 pixels on desktop, which is usually 55–60 characters.
- Description: about 920 pixels on desktop (roughly 155–160 characters) and less on mobile.
- The limits are not published and change over time, so leave a little room rather than filling every pixel.
How to use the SERP preview
- Paste your title, page address and meta description.
- Switch between desktop and mobile and watch the bars: green fits, red is cut off.
- Add the words people search for to see them in bold, as search engines highlight them.
Writing a snippet that gets clicks
- Put the main keyword near the start of the title, and your brand at the end.
- Give a reason to click in the description: a price, a benefit, free delivery, an answer.
- Write a unique title and description for every page.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a title tag be?
Under about 600 pixels, which is usually 50–60 characters. Use the bar above rather than counting characters.
How long should a meta description be?
Up to about 155–160 characters on desktop. On mobile, fewer characters are shown, so put the important part first.
Will my result look exactly like this?
Close, but not always: search engines may rewrite titles and descriptions, add dates, ratings or images, and test new layouts.
