Typing Bangla without a Bangla keyboard

Phonetic typing means writing a Bangla word the way it sounds in English letters and letting software work out the Bangla. "bangla" becomes বাংলা, "bhalobashi" becomes ভালোবাসি. It is how most people type Bangla on a computer, because there is nothing to learn beyond spelling things out.

The spelling rules

How to use it

  1. Type on the left in English letters — the Bangla appears on the right as you go.
  2. Capital letters matter: T, D, N and S give the hard ট, ড, ণ and ষ, and O gives the ও sound.
  3. If a word comes out joined where it should not be, add an o between the two consonants and try again.
  4. Copy the result into Facebook, Word, an email or anywhere else. It is ordinary Unicode Bangla.

Where the output goes

What this is not

This is transliteration, not translation. It writes Bangla sounds in Bangla letters; it does not turn English sentences into Bangla ones. It also does not know Bangla spelling, so "bhalo" gives ভালো but an unusual word may need a different spelling to come out right — try the nearest sound.

Frequently asked questions

How do I type Bangla in English letters?

Spell the word the way it sounds: "amar sonar bangla" gives আমার সোনার বাংলা. Capital T, D, N and S produce the hard ট, ড, ণ and ষ.

Do I need to install Avro?

No. This runs in the browser, so it works on a phone, a borrowed computer or anywhere you cannot install software.

Will the text work on Facebook and in Word?

Yes. The output is standard Unicode Bangla, which every modern app supports. Only old Bijoy documents need a conversion first.
